Thank you everyone for participating in the survey - as of 3/22/09 the survey was closed for this analysis with 1,023 people responding! The survey will continue to collect data which may be used in the future even though we have collected for the current project needs.
Feel free to take the survey even though data collection for this stage is complete.
Do guys knit? How many guys are knitters? Why does it seem such a surprise to find out about a male knitter? Many people are misled. It appears that people think that only women knit... and that any guy who might be interested in knitting or crochet or spinning or anything fiber related must be homosexual. After a tiny bit of exploration into the world of guys who knit it has been determined that stereotypes are inaccurate.
Through this project we will discover together all the different men who knit across the United States. It will be revealed that the "men who knit" are truckers, preachers, teachers, lawyers... from all income levels... and we will find out (quickly) that the ways we arrived at our love of knitting are as varied as we are.
Currently, we are seeking artists to feature from each of the 50 states, plus Washington DC and Puerto Rico. If you are interested in participating, please send an email and include your name, email address, blog (if you have one), etsy site, ravelry or menwhoknit ID (again, if you have one) and what state(s) you'd be interested in representing. Also, please include a short statement about you and your knitting - how did you become interested in knitting? what's your story! Soon, we will be submitting packets to each participant asking more detailed "essay style" questions. There is a lot of information to be discovered and working as a team, we are confident that the stereotypes associated to men who are interested in the fiber arts (namely knitting) will be blown out the window!
This is a work in progress - you will receive a link to requests for information that will guide your way through participation in the project. Please aslo let your male knitting friends know about the project - we continue to accept a few more particpants! Check the "Get Involved" tab at the top of the screen to find out what states still lack representation.
